  • Happy Holidays!!!!

We would like to wish all of our patients and their families a happy holiday season

As the holiday season quickly approaches with events and parties the dieter is often left out in the cold.
Th choices at parties are rarely diet friendly. The holiday atmosphere is usually carefree with lots of family, friends, co-workers trying to convince you to partake. You have worked hard all year and may feel that you deserve to let loose. You are tempted to pack away the diet for the duration of the holiday season and sort out the fallout with a New Year Resolution to get back on track. That is a HUGE MISTAKE!

    This year do something different:

    1) Continue to come for your weigh ins. Accountability and support will help prevent self sabotage.

    2) We will provide you with tips that will allow you to partake in the Pre- holiday fun without piling the pounds back on.

    3) You will get a little break with our Holiday Break Out Plan that allows you to enjoy a bit of everything.

    4) We will deal with the inevitable New Years Resolution after enjoying the holidays with no guilt and no judgement for what has happened.

    5) We will sit down together and plan where to go from here.

  • Message from Dr. Brown

We are now entering the two month mark of our clinic being closed due to the COVIID pandemic. We have been utilizing Telemedicine to make ourselves available to support patients. Many of you have continued on your program or have chosen to restart your program. We would like to take this opportunity to applaud all of you. Whether you have lost. Gained or maintained your weight you have made the choice not to allow the pandemic derail you from taking care of your health. The one power you have is to fend the virus off with a strong immune system and a healthy body.

We would like to share with you some of the research that has become available regarding the relationship between obesity and the COVIID virus. The Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases studied over 3,000 COVIID 19 patients and found that those with obesity were twice as likely to require care in hospital, three times as likely to be admitted to ICU and this increased for patients who had underlying health conditions. They found that carrying extra fat stresses the body and that the fat is biochemically active. The kind of fat that forms in your abdomen produces signalling molecules called cytokines that promote inflammation, part of the body’s immune response. The effect is like having an intrinsic cellular war constantly going on.
An infection such as COVIID is like dropping a bomb on top of it all. Your fat cells act like a reservoir for the virus.

We are bombarded by the frightening media messages that we are struggling to control the spread of the virus and just when we will think we can take a breath we are told we will be dealing with a resurgence of the virus. While it essential to follow the safety protocols of social distancing and washing our hands, our very best long term weapon against this nasty virus and those that may follow is to make sure we have a strong immune system and a healthy body.

Please drop us a quick email at drjmbrown1@yahoo.ca to let us know how you are doing or to let us know if we can help.

Keep Safe and Keep on Social Distancing!

  • From Carolina Our Nutritionist

    FROM CAROLINA OUR NUTRITIONIST

Earlier this year, the world took an unexpected turn. The news of the respiratory virus COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, and no one was prepared for it. Times are strange to say the least. As Canada declared an official state of emergency, small businesses began taking the first hit, laying off staff and closing their doors, and strangely enough grocery stores became what felt like a battle ground. Stress, anxiety, and unanswered questions are what we are left with as we await the return of “normal life”.

Stress is a response from our body often triggering both psychological, and physiological effects. From a psychological perspective, it can bring on overwhelming feelings of helplessness, and anxiousness. Physiologically however, it causes a release of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol plays a role in regulating blood pressure, triggering insulin release to maintain sugar levels, and is a key player in fat and carbohydrate metabolism. That being said, as cortisol is released in excess, we can develop feelings of hunger, and overwhelming cravings. Thus, “stress eating” was born! Coping with stress is the most difficult part about it. While stuck in quarantine, we may turn to our vices, and retreat back to bad habits. Identifying when these stress triggers happen, and using mindful coping strategies will be more beneficial in the long run. Here are few strategies that can help lower stress levels.

    Taking A Walk in Nature
Although the reason is not completely clear, studies have proven that nature has a positive therapeutic effect on those suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression. Walking 20-30 minutes 2-3 days a week can improve overall feeling of well-being, and reduce stress levels. If walking outside is not an option during this quarantine, listening to nature sounds may have a similar calming effect. Lie down for 10 minutes and find some sounds online to help relax.

Reaching Out to Your Support System
Leaning on a friend or family is said to be the one of the most beneficial ways of getting through a stressful situation. Talk therapy, even if it means calling a friend over facetime for a coffee, can be very comforting and reassuring. Chances are, your loved ones are experiencing similar feelings, so it is important we turn to each other for support during this time.

    Practicing Mindfulness
Mindfulness has been proven to also decrease feelings of stress and anxiety, and it helps us adopt a new way of dealing with our emotions. It is easier to hide from difficult emotions than to feel them through, but mindfulness teaches us to do the opposite. Accepting how we feel in that moment, and reflecting rather than reacting is the foundation of mindfulness. You can read more about practicing mindfulness here.

As we move into our second month of self-isolation, the future is still unknown. Using this time to be positive or productive is easier said than done – and completely valid. We will be here to help you through every step of the way with no judgement. Stress is inevitable, and stress eating seems almost impossible to avoid, but we have to take a stand. Your health is our priority. If you find you are struggling with the diet, modifications are available to help keep you on track. Although we don’t have an answer to most of our questions, there is comfort in knowing we are not alone. Putting ourselves first and taking control of the things we CAN will allow us to come out of this stronger!

  • Message from Dr. Brown

As we begin another week of dealing with the effects of the COVIID virus we are aware that the loss of face to face interactions with colleagues, coupled with self isolation at home can have varying impacts on our level of personal happiness, day to day structuring and overall mental health. The high levels of uncertainty and anxiety threatens any sense of world order. We will be faced with and will have to accept a ‘new normal.’ This discomfort which many of us have never experienced before, will test our resilience.

We encourage you all to :

    1) Focus on cherishing who and what is important to each of us and be mindful of the toxicity of negativity. Practice gratitude. This mindset will strengthen our resilience now and long after this situation has normalized.

    2) Remember that eating healthy will help to support your immune system. As we feel better physically we will feel better emotionally.

    3) Maintain a routine- Get dressed, have a list of chores or activities each day. This is a great time to clean out cupboards and do those tasks you have avoided.

    4) As the weather gets warmer, get outside to enjoy some sunshine- go for a walk or even sit on your balcony.

    5) Have family time; try new recipes for meals, play board games, sort through old photos and reminisce about events.

Remember doing something is better than nothing. It is human to fail but quitting should never be an option.
We are here to support you and we wish all of you and your families health and safety. Please continue to follow all established safety protocols.

    Dr. Jeff and Reisa
